All About Essential Oils

Essential oils are where all the magic happens! For thousands of years, people have been using essential oils for a range of things like natural medicinal treatments, beauty regimens, and my personal favorite aromatherapy. Essential oils are extracted from plants through steam distillation. Freshly picked plants are suspended over boiling water, and the steam pulls the oils out of the plant. What’s left are the extremely concentrated beauty secrets that we all know and love. Below you’ll hopefully discover new essential oils, get reacquainted with some of your favorites, and maybe add them to your hair care routine!

Bergamot: Softens hair, hydrating, antibacterial, and relieves stress.

Cassia: Improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and antibacterial.

Cedarwood: Promotes hair growth, improves focus, and reduces skin irritation.

Cinnamon: Relieves depression, fights free radicals, improves circulation.

Citronella: Fights dandruff, eases tangles, and protects hair color.

Clary Sage: Improves skin and hair health, relieves stress, and antibacterial (Hard to find though).

Clove: Improves skin and hair health, improves circulation, and antibacterial.

Cypress: Removes toxins, antibacterial, improves circulation, relieves anxiety, and reduces cellulite.

Eucalyptus: Nourishes hair and scalp, kills lice, and antimicrobial.

Geranium: Anti-inflammatory, improves circulation, balances hormones.

Grapefruit: Reduces grease, adds volume and shine, and protects hair from sun damage.

Jasmine: Antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and invigorating.

Lavender: Relieves headaches, improves hair loss, and reduces stress.

Lemongrass: Strengthens hair cuticle, soothes scalp, and antibacterial.

Patchouli: Stimulates blood flow and cell renewal to the scalp, strengthens hair, and prevents hair loss.

Peppermint: Stimulates scalp, antiseptic, and antibacterial.

Red Pimento: detoxifies hair and scalp, improves circulation, promotes hair growth

Rosemary: Promotes hair growth, increases blood circulation, and reduces hair loss.

Tea Tree: Soothes scalp, treats lice, and adds shine.

Wintergreen: Antibacterial, Antiviral, regulates sebum, and increases circulation.

It’s important to remember that since essential oils are very concentrated, they should never be applied directly to the skin, hair or scalp.  They should be used in combination with carrier oils.  Check out our faves in last week’s blog post.  Our favorite essential oils are as follows:

Adrienne’s Pick: Lavender, Peppermint, and Cinnamon

Myesha’s Pick: Rosemary, Tea Tree, Red Pimento, and Peppermint.
